Masquerade: A Work in Process

Description

I wasn't sure if I should put this in scraps or not, but I have a few people watching me and I wanted this to be noticed. I have a plan for this, but I trying to figure out how to get started.

Basically, when I finish I want the forehead to be tilted down slightly and maybe the light source coming from below, with heavy shadows on top. I think this is what I'm going for and I think I *could* do it, but I'm not sure.

And I can't get this thing to my symmetrical for the life of me. But I just can't do it!

This came to me as a doodle while in training class today. It was soo pretty. I redrew it 12 times this afternoon and it kept getting worse. What's above is my last and final attempt.

I contrasted and brightened with the GIMP and I think I actually made the lines look worse.

Well. now its either draw it, or actually paint a mask and take a picture. Hrm...now that I think about it, I just may do that too.

Any suggestions,comments, hate mail?

I like the design overall! Is this to be superimposed over a regular-shaped mask, or is it more rigid in the style of african masks? Is there any particular ethnic style feeding this?

I like the idea of painting this onto an actual mask. Brushwork is often a lot looser, more freehand and natural-looking than digital colouring, and this design seems to need that. You could even use putty or something to build up certain areas of a standard craft-store mask, like that sloping forehead you were looking for. Here's a site with a few mask-making tips as well. There are a lot of places you can go with that, and I think that the designs' strong enough for it, for sure. What colour scheme do you plan on using?
